EV Maritime: Electrical cabinets for Western Australia’s first fully electric ferry fleet

Promeco is supporting EV Maritime in the delivery of Western Australia’s first fully electric ferry fleet by manufacturing key electrical cabinets for five new battery electric fast ferries.

The project combines EV Maritime’s electric vessel and systems integration expertise with Promeco’s experience in marine electrical manufacturing, testing and demanding project deliveries.

Supporting a new generation of electric ferries

EV Maritime is an Auckland based maritime technology company specialising in electric vessel design, engineering and systems integration.

For the Western Australia project, EV Maritime is responsible for the electrical systems integration of five new battery electric fast ferries being built by Echo Marine Group for the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia. Once completed, the vessels will form the region’s first fully electric ferry fleet.

Promeco will manufacture and deliver key electrical cabinets for the vessels’ propulsion, power distribution and charging systems according to EV Maritime’s design and integration requirements.

Compact solutions for demanding electric vessel systems

Space and weight are critical considerations in electric vessel design. At the same time, electrical systems must meet high requirements for reliability, safety and serviceability throughout the vessel’s operation.

This places particular demands on both the design and manufacturing of electrical cabinets and on the ability of the manufacturing partner to adapt to project specific integration requirements.

“We need a supplier that is not only highly skilled in marine electrical manufacturing, but also flexible enough to respond to the packaging, integration and design demands that come with highly optimized electric vessel systems. Promeco has demonstrated that capability, and we are pleased to be working with them on this important project.”

Michael Eaglen, CEO, EV Maritime

EV Maritime highlighted Promeco’s combination of marine electrical manufacturing expertise and flexibility as an important factor in the cooperation.

Testing before delivery

Testing is an integral part of Promeco’s marine electrical deliveries. All cabinets supplied for the project will undergo comprehensive Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and the relevant classification approval before shipment.

The systematic testing phase helps verify that the electrical solutions meet the required functionality, safety and quality requirements before they reach the customer.

Building expertise for the electrification of marine transport

The project reflects the wider development of marine electrification from individual pilot vessels towards larger fleet investments.

For Promeco, the cooperation builds on decades of experience in electrical solutions for demanding marine applications and strengthens the company’s expertise in solutions supporting electric and hybrid vessels.

“This project demonstrates how marine electrification is rapidly moving from pilot projects to full fleet investments. We are proud to have been selected by EV Maritime and to contribute our marine electrical manufacturing and testing expertise to the project.”
